Profile: Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till’s Mother

UMD freshman Hamdi Barre:  “We were walking in history’s footsteps when we crossed the Tallahatchie River,” Hamdi said, “It felt powerful. That’s where Emmett Till’s body was found in 1955. Mamie, his mother, had so much strength, not only to look at her son’s disfigured body, but to open the casket for the world to see. I can’t fathom that the people who killed him got away with it. Mamie took a tragedy and exposed it to the world and made her son’s death into something that inspired a movement.”
