Reflections on Beauvoir

Tamara Smith, UMD graduate student in the Master of Social Work program: Today we went to the Beauvoir the final home of Jefferson Davis, the first and only president of the confederacy. It was a very eye-opening experience witnessing the pride that still exists in the South regarding the Civil War. Many still proudly display the Confederate flag, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is still a strong, supported organization, and many boast of the many “accomplishments” of Davis. I wonder what this means for racism, discrimination, and progress.
